Many measles cases have recently been declared in Montréal. Measles is a serious and highly contagious virus that travels through the air when an infected person coughs, sneezes or speaks. A person with measles is contagious for 4 days before and 4 days after the rash appears. The illness can last 1 to 2 weeks.
Symptoms include:
- Fever
- Cough, runny nose or conjunctivitis (red eyes and sensitivity to light)
- Red spots or rash on the skin (on the face, then on the whole body)
To avoid infecting others:
- Wear a mask
- Don't use public transit
- Since measles is highly contagious, we recommend that you contact Info-Santé 811 before visiting any health care facility (CLSC, medical clinics, GMF, local service points (vaccination centers), emergency rooms).
